Avon - Passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023, at age 95. Survived by her son, Alexander Copeland Strasenburgh (Chandra Downs) of Livonia, NY, grandson, Andrew Connell Strasenburgh of Avon, NY, Stepdaughter: Lucinda Strasenburgh of Watervliet, NY, and many step grandchildren and friends.

Born on 12-16-1927 in the town of Greene, New York, north of Binghamton, Shirley Ellen Copeland Strasenburgh grew up a farmer’s daughter on land that had been worked by her family since 1832.

She graduated from Greene High School with honors in 1945 and earned her Bachelor of Science in 1950 from Cornell University. She attended NYU for post-graduate studies and graduated from New York University in 1958 with a Master of Social Work. She began her career in Albany working in child welfare.

In 1960 she moved to Rochester, where she met her husband, Paul Strasenburgh, on a blind date. They were married on July 6, 1963, and remained married until Paul’s death in 1987. Shirley worked for the Livingston County Mental Health Clinic from 1971 until March of 1991, when she retired.

After her retirement from Livingston County, Shirley spent her time with her friends, especially Arlene McShea and Mary Mayoue. She travelled to England, Wales, Scotland, Canada, Germany, France and many trips to Albany and Texas to visit her stepdaughters, Marsha Bentley and Lucinda Strasenburgh. She remained very close to her stepdaughters. She enjoyed visiting with friends, playing bridge, spending time with her grandson, Andrew, gardening, and renovating her family homestead in Greene, New York.

Pre-deceased by her husband, Paul Strasenburgh (4-7-1987), and stepdaughter; Marsha Strasenburgh Bentley (1-15-13).

At her request, there will be no calling hours. Private interment. A private celebration of her life will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church 133 Genesee
