Obituary for John Peter Meyer

John P. Meyer, 77, passed away in the early hours of January 23, 2022, at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua after a brief illness.

John was born to Gerard and Monica Meyer in Rochester, New York, on May 16, 1944. John was the oldest boy of five siblings.

A graduate from Gates Chili high school, John went right into the workforce and became a lineman for Rochester Telephone. He retired after 25 years of service.

John married his high school sweetheart, Sharon, and they moved from the Rochester area to the small town of Pavilion to pursue John's dream of living on a farm. In Pavilion, John and Sharon raised their three children, John Jr., Dan and Sandy. The Pavilion years were special – filled with hard work and happy times. When John wasn't working, he enjoyed keeping the working farm going and teaching the kids the value of hard work. John loved taking care of the farm animals, his tractors and white-faced Hereford cows.

John and Sharon moved back to the Rochester area when the kids were grown. John had time for a new hobby; woodworking. If he wasn't creating a new woodworking project, he was tinkering on a project around the house. John took pride in keeping his lawn mowed and trimmed; his yard was the envy of the neighborhood. During the colder months, snow and ice didn't stand a chance to stick to the driveway.

John and his second wife Linda spent many happy years together. They enjoyed spending time at the lakeside cottage, the mountain house in Naples, and later in picturesque Avon. They shared a love of nature, bird watching and dogs. Their beloved dog, Lola, was at the center of John's life.

Anyone who has met John knows that memorable, firm, confident handshake. John would read the Democrat and Chronicle front to back for as long as anyone can remember. He never forgot a loved one's birthday, and his fart-themed birthday cards became legendary. His sense of humor and love of the little things, like chocolate chip cookie dough, lives on in his children.

John is survived by his wife of 19 years, Linda Grastorf Meyer; son Dan (Dulcie) Meyer of Stanley, NY; daughter Sandy (Greg) Mills of Rush, NY; grandchildren Mikayla, Katrina and Lucy; sister, Christine Coleman of Rochester, NY; several sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his first wife, Sharon Dorsey Meyer, in 2001 and his son, John Jr., in 2011.

Services and interment were held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Livingston Co. Humane Society, PO Box 233, Avon, NY 14414 or Mercy Flight Central, 2420 Brickyard Road, Canandaigua, NY 14424 in his memory.
