Donald Edward O'Brien

LIMA - Passed away on July 4, 2021, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD at age 77. He is survived by his sons, Shawn (Alicia) O’Brien of Glen Allen, Virginia and Chris O’Brien of Flagstaff, Arizona; his wife Joan O’Brien of Farmington, New York; his sister Betty Hanna of Avon, New York; his four grandchildren Jessop and Waylan, Harper and Porter; his sister-in-law Gerry O’Brien of Lima, New York and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Don was preceded in death by his parents William J. and Anna O’Brien, his brother William D. O’Brien and brother-in-law James Hanna.

He was born on August 12,1943 in Rochester, New York to William J. and Anna (Ryan) O’Brien. Don grew up in Lima, New York. He graduated from Lima High School in 1961 as the student council president and a Regents Scholarship winner. After high school, he attended college at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he played soccer and received a degree in Electrical Engineering. During Don’s time at college, he answered his country’s call and served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam as an interpreter and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his graduation from Cornell, Don worked at Eastman Kodak for his entire career, with many US patents to his credit, until his retirement in 2003.

Don enjoyed taking daily walks with his dog in Hamlin Beach Park in his retirement.

A graveside service will be held at St. Rose Cemetery in Lima on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 10 AM.
